What Are the Characteristics of Our Peony Roots Available for Sale?
Our high-quality specialty peony roots produce better long-term results than mass-market alternatives. Herbaceous peonies are cultivated by dividing the plant and are sold as bare-root divisions: each division contains three to five eyes, which are the pink or white growth buds located on the crown, along with a root system sized to support healthy first-season establishment. Plant so that the eyes sit no more than one to two inches below the soil surface, with shallower planting in warmer zones and slightly deeper in colder ones. Too deep and the plant will not flower; too shallow and the eyes will dry out or freeze. Full sun, well-drained soil with a neutral pH, and a site that does not collect standing water are the three non-negotiable site requirements. Amend the bed with compost before planting to build fertility and improve drainage, and plan to top-dress lightly at the drip line each season to maintain soil quality over time. During the first growing season, water deeply once a week to help the fibrous root system establish; after that, established plants need only occasional heavy soakings, particularly in times of drought. Following the well-known perennial truism, expect roots in the first year, shoots in the second, and flowers in the third.
